The bulk of the game is essentially the free demo and maybe 30 minutes play time after that with an extremely short scene (around 5 minutes at best for each) with your selected romantic interest at the end. While I was really upset with the shortness of Act I, I'm still hopeful that Act II will have more CGs and actualy scenes. This is not to say that the game is not good because it truly is. I just feel really upset with how little content this game has (even if the price is low).. I've been following this project since it was announced back on tumblr around 3 years ago, and even though I've played the demo a multitude of times, I still would highly recommend this even though some amount (not all!) of Act 1 encompasses the content from the previous unpolished demo. Why?A few reasons:~Script has been noticably polished and has had a decent amount of dialogue added, especially for all characters not named August~Far more CGs, redone CG art, and a big UI upgrade~Music that far better reflects the tone and mood of the game~Helping out a sole indie developer who has funneled his own money into this project instead of relying on crowdfunding. Buying Act 1 helps him fund his additional art assets for the later acts and will help them come out sooner because of itBWH Act 1 is a departure from your typical otome, and a game I _highly_ recommend if you're tired of doormat heroines, school settings, and are ultimately tired of the overused tropes and archetypes that tend to be prevalent within the genre. This is a historical themed game set during a fictional rendition of WW1 and let me tell you, it really doesn't hold back any punches when it comes to the horrible realities of war. The game starts light-hearted and optimistic enough, but soon the reality and gravity of the situation these characters are in becomes horribly apparent. While there is a certain amount of grim charm to the game as it progresses, it never gets so angsty and dark as to be devoid of humor or charm (there's some great dark humor in here!) and has a nice side dash of fun sarcasm thanks to our heroine Elfriede and her very amusing inner dialogues. The characters are all highly varied with their own unique personalities, quirks and backgrounds. From a dandy eccentric 'noble' man of a small town, to a former boxer turned conscientious objector who refuses to fight, there's a plethora of characters to love. Even within Act 1 you can see some great character development of some of the earlier characters you meet taking place, and I really can't wait to see how everything progresses.(I'm not delving too far into the romantic aspects in this review because by the time Act 1 ends we only get to see a small bit of it starting to emerge, but it does do a good job of sweetly setting up the stage between Elfriede and her guy of choice for futher acts in that regard. One neat thing is that even if you're on a certain character's route, you aren't locked in to that choice and can switch around as you please.) In a hand of a less skilled writer, some of the darker themes and character developments in the game could be easily fumbled, but honestly the writing in BWH is some of the best writing I've seen in an indie/otome release. I'd go into more description of the story, but there are some plot and character elements I feel would be ruined if I were to do so (please go in blind if you can!). Everyone comes off easily believable, with strong individual character voices as well as being descriptive but not overly to the point of tedium. The script and story so far are definitely the highlights and my favorite part of the game for sure. Lastly, the sprite art I find is very good but for me perhaps the only thing I can negatively say about the game is that I feel the CG art at times doesn't quite mesh well with the original sprite art and tone of the game. Some of the later ones especially feel like they were a bit rushed and maybe aren't as polished as they should be. The background art is simple and dreary, which fits the tone of the game, but could have been a bit more elaborate and detailed in my opinion. The worst part, however, is having to wait for Act 2, because I'm so impatient and want it so badly lol. I can't wait to meet the additional characters that are going to be turning up in Act 2, as well as learn about what happens to some of the other already introduced characters that were left in rather...dire situations by the end of Act 1. I've played so many games in the genre, both Japanese imports, retail otoges and other OELVNs and I have to say this one is one of my favorites, even only as far as the first act. It's highly worth your time and money for something so unique, refreshing, and so incredibly well-written, so please give it a chance so we can see more types of these games released :)(also Eugen is best boy, fight me). A well written and engaging visual novel with a fictionalised historical backdrop.I originally played the demo of this game (basically the first chapter with far less polish) a few years back, looking for otome games that went deeper than just pursuing your crush of choice and then living happily ever after. And all I can say is that this game delivered that, and delivered it in such a way that I've been loyally following the development ever since. As stated before, this is a more polished release than the one I played before, and I think it is worth the money asked. Act I is a bit on the short side, with the promise by Studio Elfriede that future chapters will be longer.I must admit to missing the old CG art, but the new art is still serviceable. The backgrounds are simple and drab, which works well with the bleakness of the war.The writing is where this game shines. Varied characters with different reasons for signing up for the war (or not doing so, as the case may be), not all of them necessarily likeable. I notably like Elfriede, our protagonist, a lot. She actually has a better idea about how the whole thing will turn out than most of the people in her home town, but assumes that she must be overthinking things when almost everyone else is so excited for the war. She has her funny quips (mostly in her internal monologues) early on, but doesn't force them into the later, more sombre scenes, where they would feel out of place. I do hope that her sense of humour comes back in future acts, though, to alleviate some of the heavy mood once she gets more used to the general atmosphere in the trenches.I wholeheartedly recommend this game (though if you hate episodic releases, you should probably hold out until it is finished), as long as you can handle a story where your favourite love interest might not make it to the end.. If you are tired of WW2 or any other fantasy setting and want some interesting WW1 inspired war drama with a dash of romance then this is for you.Because we're here is a very well written visual novel and captures the single lives as well as the general mood in a pre-war and post-war era pretty good. The visual novel starts out with introducing us to our main character Elfriede Rauss, who is a simple post woman. Lately she has become anxious. War is in the air. A prominent figure of her nation was assassinated outside of their territory. And thus her nation and others are starting to beat the war drums. This of course has an effect on her town and it's residents.People are being enthusiastic. People who never experienced a war in their life-time want blood - some blood. After all isn't that all exciting and those uniforms look good. Honor, glory and brotherhood... or something like that. Then we have our sceptics, invalids and black sheep who dare to question the cause of war. And between all of them we have our main character. The great goodbye comes. The town is saying it's well wishes to those green young soldiers while they board the trains that bring them to the front.Time passes by and there really is no progress on the front. This only spurns our post woman to see with her own eyes how it truly is and to search for her friends, so she finds some friendly face that lead her into the trenches. That's when everything goes wrong and she ends up seeing too much to turn around. The focus here lies oblivious on the lives of the people who went to the front or are left behind. These characters are fleshed out extremely well and all come with their own take on the situation. I'm genuinely happy with how these characters evolve and just how diverse they are. Everyone has their own "truth", their own world view and the game isn't beating them down for having them.Another personal bonus for me is that when people write about some historical "Germany" or alternate universe Germany they don't really get the names right. This one does. These names were popular around 1910-20.And I should really put an emphasis on this being a war-drama. War is terrible and terrible things happen in war. PTSD, people dying or getting mutilated is a norm in the trenches.Edit: Apparently the demo is outdated and not available anymore. So I have taken the link down.. Overall, I'm enjoying act one of this game. I like the vairety of the casts, and that all the potential interests have distinct looks and personalities. While I really like the sprite art, I was really disapointed to find out that the CGs are draw by someone else in a completely different art style (that I personally like significantly less). Additionally, some of the backgrounds look sloppy or half finished. I think the mix off all the different styles makes the game feel disjointed. I also found the way Elfriede talks/narrates to be kind of annoying, with all her half-finished sentences and thoughts. I get that she's supposed to be "neurotic" but it just made her hard to follow at times. Lastly, I'm really hoping there are at least a couple female love interests introduce in the next act.... I'm so glad to see this game come out for release! I have been following its development for years, and always love reading its updated versions. The witty dialogue makes for laughs, and its melancholy setting brings me to tears. Quite the lovely game that an otome fan that demands a bit more grit would love!. Impressively well-written, every line is so informative so efficiently in a quaint old-timey dialect, the heavy topic is carefully balanced and accentuated by much-appreciated humour that always hits and is very endearing to characters that are already very likeable and whose roles are a great, varied portrayal of pretty much every type of person that could be in this situation and really do feel like their own individual with thought processes that are well-founded. Elfriede is a lovely, silly yet smart protagonist and a breath of fresh air in the otome genre, or any media for that matter. Revolving the story around the instigator to the south is also a refreshing way of handling a topic many are familiar with. Uniquely charming and thoughtfully crafted.. I've been following this game since its demo version and I'm really happy to see it completed. At first I had my doubts about how the otome genre could be handled in a WWI setting, but Studio Elfriede did an amazing job balancing the romance aspect and the harsh reality of war. Act I doesn't contain much romance as it mainly functions to introduce the characters and build up the setting, but it does it really well. The cast of characters is extensive, but each one is unique and feels realistic. Their views on the war and their situation feel believable, and you grow to understand where they're coming from even if their views conflict with your own. I just really like the characters in this game. Never before have I wanted to know more about the main love interests like I did in Because We're Here, even if they're characters I'm not romantically interested in. Elfriede, the main heroine, is another strong aspect of this game. She's not your typical otome heroine with little to no personality or backbone; she is her own person with her own beliefs and emotions which get explored in the game. I genuinely enjoyed playing as Elfriede and learning about the world through her eyes. What really sold the game to me though, is the way different aspects of the war were presented in a realistic way. You get to explore life on both the home front and the trenches and learn about the psychological and physical impacts it can have on a person. It explores death and loss but also hope and determination. All of this was handled so well in the game and I'm really excited to learn more about the world and characters of Because We're Here in the upcoming Acts.Because We're Here is more than a romance game so if you're here just for romance, this game may not be for you. But if you're looking for something with depth that explores different aspects of life and gives you some food for thought, then by all means buy the game. It's definitely worth the money.. Incredibly well written and well paced. The tone is well executed - dark and shocking, which is expected from a war story, but not pointlessly gritty and not wall-to-wall bleakness. It's not heavily romance focused (yet?) but it's warm and even tender when it needs to be. Even though most of the characters are likeable, the story seems unconcerned with presenting them as objectively good people (one of the characters states that they're a Malthusian) which I think is fitting for a game like this. The art is hit or miss but it's never downright ugly. eugen is good boy i love him Wishlist Act II!: The store page for Because We're Here Act II is now up, meaning it's available to wishlist! (LINK)Act II is titled Live and Let Live, and is the longest of BWH's four acts, at an estimated 6-7 hours. It's scheduled for release in June - I’m working off the provisional release date of the 20th.
